Not an April Fools joke

Amazon has agreed to new deals with Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins. The agreements move away from Amazon’s $9.99 pricing model toward an agency model with variable, publisher-controlled pricing. Random House is the last big publisher without similar agreements with Amazon or Apple.

Lost Man Booker Prize

There was a change of the rules for the Man Booker Prize in 1971 which prevented any books published in 1970 from ever being eligible for the award. In case you missed it, they’re going retro. There’s a longlist of 22 books from 1970 that’ll be narrowed to a shortlist of six on March 25th. You’ll be able to vote online for your fave after the announcement. Who’s your frontrunner?

NYT squabble over digital-edition pricing

Good little write-up at Silicon Alley Insider about the conflict inside the New York Times. Digital group wants to charge $10/mo for the iPad edition of its content; the print group (which has traditionally had pricing control over digital editions, such as the Kindle version) wants to charge $30/mo.

To top it off, the web edition of the paper is already available for free through 2011.
