In the spirit of fun, I present to you:
(Disclaimer: Definitely NSFW)
If you live outside Seattle or the Pacific Northwest, you might not know Macklemore yet. I resisted for as long as I could, but as it turns out, his songs are like Diet Coke or the first two seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. For me, resistance is futile. I’m drinking the Kool Aid, and it’s delicious.
Fun facts about Macklemore:
– He’s spoken out quite a bit about the acceptance/perpetuation of homophobia and homophobic slurs in rap culture, so he wrote this song, “Same Love.” The cover of the single has a photo of his uncle & his uncle’s lifelong partner, and they’re TOTALLY ADORABLE.
– Born and raised in Seattle, he has a tribute song to Dave Niehaus, beloved Seattle sports broadcaster and voice of the Mariners. All the proceeds from the song benefit the Rainier Boys and Girls Club in Seattle.
– He holds pizza parties for his fans.
I don’t know what it is. I can’t not smile and/or dance to some of his songs. He’s so nerdy and earnest and dropping “hella” like it’s 1999.
He’s been criticized for being too earnest and for the way his songs often verge on what MFA students might call propaganda. That’s a valid criticism, I think. But I also think: the guy is an up-and-coming musician. I’m sure the music business will beat any joy and sincerity and earnestness out of him soon enough. But for now: some of it may be propaganda, but damn if it’s not catchy.
Here’s an interview with him.
