there’s been much ado on the interwebs this week about roger ebert’s profile in esquire.  read it.  then read his response.

the millions made up some wacky idea about dave eggers taking over the paris review.  but, personally, i like the best american non-required reading/826/mcsweeney’s man right where he is. (p.s. if you missed it, the real timothy mcsweeney passed away last month.)

while some lit mags are trying to capture your attention with free, PDF only issues, other publishers are doing something even more awesome with free PDFs that have absolutely nothing to do with reading on a computer screen.

    And compilations like this. Perfect for the end of the week when I’m willing to think but much more willing to click and read interesting articles and look at pretty pictures for an hour or so.

    Sadly, Soichi’s photos aren’t hi-res enough for me to add them to my collection of NASA orbiter desktop backgrounds. Maybe I’ll do a patchwork compilation. I also recommend reading the comments on the pics; mixing multiple languages with space geekery is entertaining in itself.

    Speaking of cool photos from space. A couple MIT students put together a $150 balloon-camera combo that got pictures of the curvature of the Earth. Pretty wicked pictures.
